WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 6, 2025) — The Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network (MFAN) is alarmed by the Trump Administration’s recently released Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Request. The budget proposes a staggering total 84% reduction in State Department and USAID funding (when including budget rescissions from prior fiscal years), including $2.5 billion in cuts to State and USAID operations.

“This budget blueprint will cause grave hardship in communities around the world and come with a huge price tag for our country by ending investments that help fight contagious disease, prevent conflict and instability, and spur economic growth,” said MFAN Executive Director Tod Preston. "These cuts would demolish years of investments in effectiveness measures including staffing capacity and expertise, locally-based partners, programmatic advancements, and data architecture"

As the appropriations process gets underway on Capitol Hill, MFAN calls on Congress to protect lifesaving and transformative international programs and provide the resources needed to ensure efficient and impactful programming that benefits U.S. objectives at home and abroad.

About MFAN:
The Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network (MFAN) is a bipartisan coalition of international development practitioners, policy advocates, and experts committed to making U.S. foreign assistance more effective, accountable, and results-driven.
